UL Solutions Certifies Magic Leap 2 with First Virtual Reality Equipment Safety

UL Solutions has introduced a new testing and certification service to help manufacturers address the safety risks associated with virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed-reality products. The first device to achieve this certification is Magic Leap 2. This certification, known as ANSI/CAN/UL 8400, is the world’s first safety standard dedicated to spatial computing and extended reality equipment safety. Magic Leap 2 is an enterprise AR device designed to overcome previous barriers to AR adoption, such as low-quality visuals and issues with bright environments. The market for VR, AR, and MR headsets and smart glasses is growing rapidly, with analysts predicting that over 100 million units will be in use by 2023.

UL Solutions Director and Global Industry Leader, Consumer Technology, Ibrahim Jilani, explained that the rapid innovation in the VR, AR, and MR space is presenting both opportunities and safety risks for consumers and manufacturers. With the demand for products like head-mounted displays and holographic displays increasing, manufacturers and developers are faced with the challenge of balancing design and innovation with user safety. UL Solutions’ comprehensive range of testing and certification services aims to help manufacturers address safety concerns relating to prolonged use, harmful optical radiation sources, and spatial awareness.

In addition to testing and certification services for VR, AR, and MR products, UL Solutions also offers expertise in electromagnetic compatibility and radio frequency, as well as support for global market access needs. The company’s goal is to transform safety, security, and sustainability challenges into opportunities for customers, providing them with the necessary certifications and guidance to navigate complex supply chains and global markets. UL Solutions’ certifications, like ANSI/CAN/UL 8400, signify trust and assurance in the safety of their customers’ products.
