The Lorain Port and Finance Authority has decided to delay renovations at Black River Landing in downtown Lorain until fall 2024. This decision was made to avoid disrupting popular events such as Rockin’ on the River, International Festival Bazaar, Summer Market, Brewfest, and dragon boat racing. Originally scheduled for fall 2023, the project has been postponed due to a lack of immediate funding. The Port Authority aims to complete the full renovations, which include a new stage, green room, and amphitheater seating, at an estimated cost of $10 million.
The Port Authority has made progress in the early stages of the project, with the schematic design completed and a construction manager under contract. Despite seeking additional funds, the Port Authority decided to delay the project until it had sufficient funding to complete the entire renovation. This approach is seen as a wise business decision, as it would save the agency approximately $750,000 in extra costs if they had to remobilize after starting construction without finishing.
The renovation plan for Black River Landing aims to transform it into a state-of-the-art outdoor entertainment venue. The proposed upgrades include a new pavilion-style stage, a plaza-like area connecting the site to Broadway, and a permanent top, lighting, and sound for the stage. The Port Authority envisions accommodating 20,000 people at the festival site and hopes that residents will also utilize the space for picnics and other activities when there are no events. By delaying the renovations and focusing on securing grants, the Port Authority aims to ensure a full season of summer events at Black River Landing in 2024.
