Miss Iowa USA supports local Black-owned businesses with her platform.

After years of persevering in the world of pageants, McKenzie Kerry has finally been crowned Miss Iowa USA at the age of 25. Her achievement is especially significant as she is only the second Black woman to hold this title in the pageant’s lengthy history. Representing her Black history and serving as a role model for aspiring Black women and girls, Kerry expressed her honor in being able to create a positive impact on her community.

In preparation for her moment in the spotlight, Kerry carefully curated her wardrobe, which included a pair of gold mesh hoop earrings provided by Ankeny jeweler Aminna Taylor of Twenty-Eight Minna. Taylor, a self-made businesswoman, emphasized the importance of representation and recognition for small businesses like hers. Kerry’s decision to wear Taylor’s jewelry not only heightened her look but also provided a platform for supporting Black entrepreneurs and their products, showcasing their legitimacy and quality.

Looking ahead to the Miss USA pageant in August, Kerry is enthusiastic about using her platform to lift up women who share her background. She is determined to advocate for her community and bring awareness to issues affecting African American children and families. With the support of small businesses like Twenty-Eight Minna, Kerry’s journey highlights the power of representation, entrepreneurship, and community support in achieving shared goals and values.
