Google to Reinstate Election Ad Ban After Polls Close

Google has announced plans to prohibit advertisers from running ads related to the US presidential election after the polls close on November 5th. According to a report by Axios, this marks the second occasion on which Google has decided to implement such a ban post-election, having first done so during the 2020 election.

The company has expressed that this decision is taken “out of an abundance of caution and to limit the potential for confusion,” considering the likelihood that votes will continue to be counted following Election Day. During the previous presidential election in 2020, the confirmation of President Biden’s victory was delayed by several days due to the high volume of postal voting spurred by the pandemic.

Google’s policy will pertain to any US election ads or advertisements that reference US elections across its platforms, including Google Ads, YouTube, and Shopping ads.

Similarly, Meta has announced restrictions on new political advertisements during the final week leading up to the US election, echoing the measures it took in 2020. Additionally, Meta has required advertisers to disclose the use of AI or other digital techniques in altering ads.
