Customizable, Open-Source 3D-Printed Trackpad from Ploopy

The Ploopy trackpad utilizes a Raspberry Pi RP2040 for power, while finger tracking is managed by a Microchip ATMXT1066TD processor. These components are integrated into a single mainboard, which can be easily transferred into different cases. Although the included 3D-printed case is praised by Ploopy for its excellent surface finish and suitability for all-day use, the design files are open-source, allowing users to print it using different materials or modify the design as desired.

The trackpad is marketed in gray or black, offering flexibility for users who wish to 3D print their own case in any color. The device is slightly larger than Apple’s Magic Trackpad; however, its tracking area is a bit smaller, exceeding six inches, still sufficient for five-finger gestures. Currently, the trackpad is compatible only with Windows and Linux operating systems.

The device requires a constant USB cable connection to a PC, as it does not have wireless capabilities. While adding wireless functionality is a possibility, it may present a complex challenge due to QMK’s limited Bluetooth hardware support.

The Ploopy trackpad is available in two formats: a fully assembled version and a DIY kit. The fully assembled trackpad is ready for immediate use and comes in black or gray, priced at approximately $94 USD ($129.99 CAD). Alternatively, the DIY kit, which requires assembly using tools like a screwdriver, tweezers, and pliers, is offered at about $73 USD ($99.99 CAD). Both options have an expected delivery within 20 weeks from the order date.
