Guide AI podcast hosts with Google’s NotebookLM tool

Google’s NotebookLM now includes an option to customize its podcast-like Audio Overviews. Users can provide instructions to the AI hosts on specific topics to focus on or adapt their discussions for different audiences before generating discussions within the note-taking app.

Last month, Google introduced the Audio Overviews feature in NotebookLM, featuring two AI hosts who engage in dynamic discussions of users’ research. However, the company clarifies that these overviews are not intended to be an exhaustive or objective summary of a topic. Instead, they reflect the uploaded sources and any instructions users provide.

To customize the discussion, users can open a notebook in NotebookLM, select “Notebook guide,” and then navigate to the “Deep dive conversation” option. By selecting “Customize,” users can input specific instructions for the AI hosts to follow, allowing NotebookLM to generate a conversation based on these guidelines.

Additionally, Google has removed the “experimental” label from NotebookLM and introduced a background listening feature for Audio Overviews. This allows users to listen to the AI hosts’ discussions while working in other areas of the app. Moreover, in the previous month, Google enhanced NotebookLM’s capability to explore YouTube videos with the addition of transcription features.
