Microsoft is updating the Windows Hello authentication system in Windows 11, which features facial and fingerprint recognition. This modernization includes visual updates, new iconography, and enhancements to passkeys. It is currently in beta testing with Windows Insiders.
The redesigned user interface will not only be visible on the Windows 11 login screen but will also be present when using passkeys to log into websites and applications. According to a statement from the Windows team, the updates provide a streamlined experience that ensures secure and efficient authentication, allowing users to easily switch between authentication options and select passkeys or devices.
The current passkey support in Windows 11 involves scanning QR codes and using an outdated interface. With the new overhaul in the Windows Hello UI, this process will be significantly improved. Additionally, Microsoft introduces an API for third-party password and passkey managers, enabling developers to integrate with the updated Windows Hello experience. This will also allow users to authenticate apps and websites on a PC using a passkey from a mobile device and will offer the capability to save passkeys to third-party apps or sync them with a Microsoft account.
Testing for this new Windows Hello experience has begun in the beta channel (23H2) and is expected to roll out to the dev channel (24H2) as builds resume. It is anticipated that the updated Windows Hello UI will be available to all Windows 11 users in the coming months.
