Amazon has announced plans to shut down its app store for Android on August 20, 2025. The company has informed developers that they will no longer be able to submit new applications to the store. In addition, Amazon will also terminate its Coins digital currency, which has been used for purchasing games and apps within the app store.
According to a support page statement, users will lose access to the Amazon Appstore on their Android devices from August 20, 2025. The Amazon Coins program will be discontinued on the same date. The company has committed to refunding any unused coins to users as of that date.
Despite the changes, the app store will still function on Amazon’s proprietary devices, such as Fire TV and Fire Tablet. The company has not yet provided any further explanations regarding the decision to close the app store.
Amazon has been working to establish a competitive alternative to Google’s app store ecosystem since 2011, including an effort to support the now-defunct Fire Phone project. Additionally, last year, Amazon disclosed plans to end support for its app store on Windows, which has been offering Android apps, starting March 5, 2025. This Windows program initially began in 2021.
