US Government Accuses SpaceX of Discrimination in Hiring Asylum Recipients and Refugees

The U.S. Justice Department has filed a lawsuit against SpaceX, the rocket and satellite company owned by Elon Musk, for alleged discrimination against asylum recipients and refugees in their hiring practices. The lawsuit claims that SpaceX routinely discouraged asylees and refugees from applying or considering them for employment due to their citizenship status, which goes against the Immigration and Nationality Act. The Justice Department also highlighted online posts by Musk himself that made “discriminatory statements.” In response, Musk called the lawsuit a “weaponization of the DOJ for political purposes” and argued that the company was told hiring non-permanent residents would violate international arms trafficking laws.

The Justice Department’s investigation found that SpaceX failed to fairly consider and hire asylees and refugees because of their citizenship status and actively discouraged them from seeking job opportunities within the company. The lawsuit seeks fair consideration and back pay for those individuals who were deterred or denied employment due to this alleged discrimination. SpaceX has previously stated that they could only hire U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents based on federal export control laws.
