In Nuuk, Greenland, on Saturday, Denmark’s Foreign Minister criticized the tone of the Trump administration regarding its comments on Denmark and Greenland. He emphasized that Denmark is already boosting its investment in Arctic security and remains open to further collaboration with the United States.
Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen made these remarks through a social media video following a visit by U.S. Vice President JD Vance to the strategically significant island. Despite Rasmussen’s comments, U.S. President Donald Trump continued a firm approach, stating in an NBC News interview that he does not rule out military force when discussing the potential acquisition of Greenland.
Rasmussen addressed the situation in English, stating, “Many accusations and many allegations have been made. And of course, we are open to criticism, but we do not appreciate the tone in which it is being delivered. This is not how you speak to close allies.” He reiterated the strong alliance between Denmark and the United States.
Greenland, a territory of Denmark, holds strategic importance for national security, according to Trump, who expressed a preference to acquire it peacefully, though he kept military options open.
In response to questions about Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and his territorial intentions in Ukraine, Trump remarked, “I don’t care,” emphasizing his focus on U.S. interests.
During his visit, Vice President Vance criticized Denmark for insufficient investment in Greenland’s security, asserting that the situation demands a change, especially as the Trump administration seeks control over the territory.
Vance visited U.S. troops stationed at Greenland’s Pituffik Space Base and urged for Denmark’s improved investment and security measures for Greenland, describing the region as “an incredible, beautiful landmass filled with incredible people.”
On Friday, Trump released a video on his platform Truth Social titled “America Stands With Greenland,” displaying historical footage of U.S. troops in Greenland during World War II. Vance advocated for a strong partnership with the U.S., highlighting potential benefits in security and economic terms for Greenland should it seek independence from Denmark.
Greenland’s political landscape reacted with opposition to the Trump administration’s plans, as local lawmakers formed a coalition government to resist such overtures. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen countered claims of insufficient defense investment, defending Denmark’s status as a strong ally.
Moreover, Danish King Frederik X expressed his continued affection and connection to Greenland through a Facebook post amidst the ongoing diplomatic tensions.
Demonstrations occurred outside the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen, with protesters demanding a reconsideration of U.S. intentions. Meanwhile, the Greenlandic Avannaata Qimussersu dogsled race proceeded with notable adjustments, as Usha Vance, the Vice President’s wife, did not attend, aligning with her husband’s alternative agenda.
In his video, Løkke Rasmussen referenced a 1951 defense agreement with the U.S., highlighting opportunities for enhanced American military presence in Greenland, should that be a desired path. He pointed out Denmark’s recent increased spending on Arctic security, totaling 14.6 billion Danish kroner, which includes new naval vessels, long-range drones, and satellites.
