Context.ai, a startup specializing in evaluations and analytics for AI models, announced on Tuesday that its co-founders will be joining OpenAI. Following this transition, Context.ai intends to phase out its products, as indicated in a message on the company’s website. OpenAI, when approached for details, declined to disclose the terms of the agreement.
The website message emphasized the importance of evaluations in developing high-performing AI applications, acknowledging the challenges in executing them effectively. It noted that Context.ai spent two years constructing evaluations and analytics for models, experiencing several pivots during this period. The company expressed enthusiasm for its upcoming chapter with OpenAI, extending gratitude to everyone involved in its journey.
Founded in 2023 by former Google employees Henry Scott-Green and Alex Gamble, Context.ai successfully raised $3.5 million in seed funding from GV and Theory Ventures in the same year. A key offering from the startup was a dashboard enabling customers to analyze data produced by AI models to determine if the content effectively addressed queries. The platform also allowed users to share transcripts via an API, which Context.ai would analyze to categorize and tag them based on subject matter.
In a 2023 interview with TechCrunch, Scott-Green noted that developers often describe their models as “a black box.” He mentioned having discussions with numerous developers who consistently encounter issues, such as a lack of understanding about model usage and performance.
As of August 2023, Context.ai was comprised of six employees, though the current size of the team and whether all staffers will be offered positions at OpenAI remain unclear.
In a post on X, Scott-Green announced that he and Gamble would focus on creating essential tools for developers at OpenAI, particularly in model evaluations. According to Scott-Green’s LinkedIn profile, he is now serving as a product manager at OpenAI, working on building evaluations.
