OpenAI and The Washington Post have announced a new content partnership in which ChatGPT will summarize and link to the Post’s original reporting within its responses.
This collaboration is among several media partnerships established by OpenAI, which has made agreements with over 20 news organizations, including notable entities like The Guardian and Axios.
The Washington Post aims to capitalize on the expansive reach of ChatGPT, which currently has more than 500 million users. Meanwhile, OpenAI is expected to benefit from providing more high-quality responses, supported by the Post’s “timely, well-sourced reporting,” as stated in the press release.
The financial details of the agreement remain undisclosed, and The Washington Post has not provided further information upon inquiry. OpenAI has yet to respond to requests for comment on this matter.
OpenAI’s collaborations with newsrooms have been welcomed by some, though not universally. For instance, The New York Times is currently pursuing legal action against OpenAI, accusing the company of using its copyrighted materials without permission, a claim that OpenAI refutes.
