Google is testing a new Discover Feed on its desktop homepage in India. This feed will provide users with recommended content such as news headlines, weather forecasts, sports scores, and stock information. While the Discover Feed is already available on Google’s mobile homepage, this is the first time it is being tested on desktop. Lara Levin, a Google spokesperson, confirmed the update and stated that it is currently being tested in India. If successful, Google may roll out the Discover Feed to all desktop users in the future.
This change is significant for Google in India as its homepage is one of the most visited websites globally. The introduction of the Discover Feed not only makes it easier for users to track news and related articles, but it also enhances the engagement and informativeness of Google Search. However, some users may have mixed reactions to this update as the discovery feed could introduce clutter to the otherwise clean Google homepage. Currently, Google has not provided an option for users to opt out of the new Discover Feed.
Interestingly, the screenshot from MSPowerUser reveals that the Discover feed appearing on desktop resembles what Microsoft offers on its search engine Bing. Microsoft allows Bing users to customize their homepage and choose whether to enable the news feed, unlike Google. Additionally, Google recently announced new features for its Search Generative Experience (SGE), including the ability to generate images from text prompts. This aligns with Bing’s Image Creator feature announced earlier. Overall, Google aims to make its AI-backed Search Generative Experience more interactive and useful for users, allowing them to accomplish tasks more efficiently while searching.
