Intruder Arrested at UnitedHealthcare HQ Months Post-CEO Killing, Mangione Manhunt

Authorities reported an arrest near UnitedHealthcare’s headquarters in Minnesota following sightings of an intruder, months after the company’s CEO’s death. This was announced by the police on Monday.

Law enforcement in Minnetonka, a suburb of Minneapolis, apprehended a suspect outside the premises of UnitedHealthcare’s corporate campus.

Confirmation of the arrest was provided by the Minnetonka Police Department, which had initially stated via Twitter, shortly before 11:30 a.m., that a significant police presence was observed at the health insurance company. Aerial footage depicted numerous law enforcement vehicles from a range of agencies at the location, accompanied by an ambulance on standby. No injuries were reported.

Subsequently, the police department updated the situation, indicating that the suspect was taken into custody without any incident.

“The public is not at risk,” the department assured. “We are currently in the process of clearing the scene.”

Further details about the incident were not immediately disclosed by authorities.

UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was fatally shot in New York City on December 4 while en route to an investor conference in midtown Manhattan. Luigi Mangione, 26, who is accused of this crime, entered a plea of not guilty to state murder and terrorism charges in December.

The CEO’s murder and the subsequent manhunt which led to Mangione’s capture unsettled the corporate sector. It prompted some health insurers to swiftly transition to remote work operations or virtual shareholder meetings. Moreover, the incident emboldened health insurance critics, with some expressing support for Mangione as a symbol of their dissatisfaction with issues like coverage rejections and exorbitant medical expenses.

Surveillance footage captured a masked assailant shooting Thompson from behind. According to police reports, the ammunition bore the words “delay,” “deny,” and “depose,” mirroring a phrase often used to critique insurer tactics aimed at avoiding claim payments.

In addition to state charges, Mangione also faces federal accusations. U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi recently announced that federal prosecutors have been instructed to pursue the death penalty.
