Ray Dalio Attributes All His Success to Meditation: ‘It Provides Calmness’

Ray Dalio, in his 2021 book on “the changing world order,” emphasizes the importance of maintaining calm and staying connected as the world experiences rapid changes in government, technology, and climate, among other areas.

In the midst of uncertainty, Dalio attributes his ability to stay focused and succeed to a daily practice: meditation. Dalio shared with CNBC in 2021 that he began meditating in 1969, well before establishing Bridgewater Associates.

The billionaire investor has stated that any success he has achieved is largely due to his meditation practice. Many notable individuals, such as Oprah Winfrey and LeBron James, as well as former Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy—who led his team to the 2023 National Championship—also advocate for the benefits of meditation. McCarthy refers to it as a “tune-up” time that prepares his mind for success.

“I can react from a higher perspective instead of simply acting on impulse,” McCarthy remarked in an interview during the season.

Meditation is widely praised for reducing stress and helping individuals focus on the present moment. It’s a proven remedy for high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression.

Dalio advises people to meditate, citing the calmness and sense of spirituality it brings, along with a feeling of connectedness to the universe and others.

Dalio practices Transcendental Meditation (TM), a method that involves silently repeating a mantra with closed eyes to achieve a state of stillness and alertness. The Beatles were notable proponents of this practice, which the Cleveland Clinic notes can enhance self-esteem and decrease stress. TM is typically practiced for two 20-minute sessions each day, with teaching provided by certain nonprofits that charge up to $980, depending on household income.

Other forms of meditation, such as guided meditations and mindfulness meditations, help regulate breathing and reduce symptoms related to mental health issues. These practices are often available at little to no cost.

Starting with focusing on breathing is the most accessible way to begin meditating. In times when everything seems to be moving too quickly, meditation offers a way to deliberately slow down both the mind and body for sustained success.

Dalio described the experience to CNBC, noting, “You’re peaceful. You’re quiet. You’re not awake, but you’re not asleep.”
