President Donald Trump indicated that he would not dismiss the possibility of pursuing a third term in the White House. During a phone interview with NBC News on Sunday, Trump stated that “there are methods” that could potentially enable him to seek another term.
Trump emphasized that his comment was not made in jest, adding, “But I’m not — it is far too early to think about it.” According to the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, which was enacted following Franklin D. Roosevelt’s election to a fourth term in 1944, US presidents are limited to serving no more than two terms. Amending the Constitution is a lengthy process that takes several years.
The former president, who will be 81 years old at the end of his current term, mentioned that “a lot of people want me to do it.” However, he chose not to elaborate on the specific methods through which he could legally pursue a third term. Trump was initially elected president in 2016 and, after being defeated by Joe Biden in 2020, was reelected in 2024.
