Vietnam has proposed eliminating all tariffs on imports from the United States following the announcement by Donald Trump of a 46% levy on the Southeast Asian nation. This proposal was outlined in an April 5 letter from Vietnam’s Communist Party.
The offer was detailed by party chief To Lam in correspondence to the U.S. president, as reported by Bloomberg. In the letter, Lam requested that the U.S. refrain from imposing any additional tariffs or fees on Vietnamese goods and sought a postponement of the tariff implementation announced by Trump until at least 45 days after April 9.
The letter corroborated remarks made by Trump on Friday via his Truth Social network, following a call between the two leaders. Vietnam, which has increasingly positioned itself as a key manufacturing and export alternative to China, was subjected to one of the highest tariff rates worldwide the previous Wednesday.
