Andrea Cortes, a finance student at Bryant University, recently attended the Women in Alternative Investments Career Forum where she gained valuable insights and connections. As a woman entering a male-dominated field, Cortes found inspiration in the quote, “If you’re in the room, you deserve to be in the room.” This message resonated with all attendees at the conference who are working to break barriers and create change in the finance industry. Cortes, a first-generation college student, has always pursued opportunities with determination and humility. Her connections and support system have helped her rise to challenges and make her family proud.
Cortes’ journey to Bryant University began with the guidance of her high school accounting teacher, James Isabella, who highlighted the incredible programs and opportunities at Bryant. Intrigued, Cortes applied early action and felt a different vibe when visiting the campus. She was accepted and made the decision to attend Bryant, commuting to campus from her home. Cortes immersed herself in the university experience, participating in the 4MILE program, which celebrates diversity and multiculturalism, and joining the Multicultural Student Union.
During her freshman year, Cortes majored in Finance, minored in Accounting and Italian, and connected with senior women studying Finance through lunch discussions. Lecturer in Finance, Mara Derderian, recognized Cortes’ potential and offered her an opportunity to attend the Women in Alternative Investments Career Forum in New York City. Out of 600 applicants, Cortes was one of the 200 selected, and her experience at the conference provided her with inspiration and expanded her professional network. She now has a keen interest in exploring the field of private equity and is actively involved in Bryant’s Finance Association.
Looking ahead, Cortes is determined to be successful while remembering and giving back to the people who have supported her throughout her journey. She serves as a mentor for programs like 4MILE and Bryant’s Accounting Careers Leadership Institute, paying forward the guidance she received from her mentors. Cortes acknowledges the significant impact her parents, Isabella, Derderian, and the conference panelist have had on her growth and success. She remains focused on achieving her goals while embodying gratitude and appreciation for those who have helped her along the way.
