Dewey Beach commissioners are considering reducing the number of free parking nights and extending the paid parking season. The town currently offers free parking from 5 to 11 p.m. on Mondays through Wednesdays during the traditional paid parking season from May 15 to Sept. 15. However, some town leaders believe that eliminating these free parking nights could generate much-needed revenue for the town’s budget. This proposal has sparked a debate between those who believe free parking attracts visitors and benefits local businesses and those who argue that the town needs to prioritize financial stability.
The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce has expressed concerns about the potential negative impact on family-friendly events and attractions if visitors have to pay for parking. The chamber has already incurred significant expenses hosting these events and worries that fewer people will attend if they have to pay for parking. Similarly, the business community has cautioned against any changes that could deter visitors and harm local establishments. However, some argue that the town is losing out on considerable revenue by offering free parking three nights a week, and these funds could be used for infrastructure improvements, public safety, and supporting local organizations.
Former Commissioner David Moskowitz has suggested a compromise that would still allow for some free parking nights but charge for parking on certain holidays. Meanwhile, Town Manager Bill Zolper has estimated that the town loses around $500,000 each summer by offering free parking three nights a week. The issue has been referred to the budget and finance committee for further evaluation, and their findings will help determine whether changes to the town’s parking policies will be implemented.
