A recent survey conducted by ResumeBuilder revealed that the rise of artificial intelligence has already resulted in some workers being laid off from their positions, as 37% of business leaders who participated in the survey admitted that they have let go of employees due to their roles becoming redundant as a result of AI being implemented in their companies. Additionally, 44% of companies using AI, or planning to do so by next year, anticipate that employees will likely be replaced by AI in 2024. The results of the survey indicate that AI proficiency will be a highly sought-after skill in the job market in the future, with 91% of companies planning to start using AI in 2024 planning to hire new employees next year, and 96% of them believing that having experience with AI will be beneficial for candidates.
The survey’s report also highlighted the importance of employees enhancing their skills and staying relevant in their fields to avoid being replaced by AI. ResumeBuilder’s resume and career strategist Julia Toothacre advised employees to carefully consider the aspects of their jobs that could potentially be taken over by AI and to become proficient in areas where human intervention is still necessary. Additionally, the survey showed that current applications of AI in the workplace include customer support, research, and creating summaries of meetings or documents, leading to the likely elimination of administrative and customer support jobs.
The survey participants were primarily from industries such as construction, education, finance and insurance, information technology, software, healthcare, retail, and manufacturing. The findings are consistent with similar surveys conducted by FreshBooks, which revealed a wide range of opinions among small business owners and accounting professionals regarding the potential impact of AI on their industries. While some expressed concern about the possibility of AI replacing jobs, others were more confident in their skills and believed that AI would not have a significant impact on their roles.
