The Shelton school district in Connecticut has appointed Jacqueline Teulings as its new Director of Finance and Business Services, making her the third finance director in just two years. Teulings, who currently serves as the chief financial officer for the State Education Resource Center of Connecticut, brings over 30 years of experience in both the public and private sectors. Superintendent Ken Saranich expressed confidence in Teulings’ ability to ensure financial stability and growth for Shelton Public Schools. The selection process for the position involved reviewing and interviewing 26 candidates out of more than 80 applicants.
Teulings’ appointment comes at a critical time for the school district, as it recently faced a budget deficit of nearly $2.8 million for the 2022-23 fiscal year. This deficit, which was larger than expected, was disclosed by the city finance office in August. The previous finance director, Todd Heffelfinger, left his position in October. Despite the challenges, the Board of Education Chair Kathy Yolish and Jim Orazietti, the board Finance Committee Chair, expressed confidence in Teulings’ qualifications and suitability for the position. Teulings’ arrival offers hope for addressing the financial concerns and ensuring the continued growth and stability of Shelton Public Schools.
Teulings obtained her accounting degree from Post University and succeeds Rick Belden, who retired in 2021, as the second finance director. Her comprehensive background in financial management and previous experience in both municipal and educational environments were key factors in her selection. The district’s leadership cabinet, including Superintendent Saranich, Yolish, and Orazietti, are eager for Teulings to join the Finance Department and contribute to the Shelton Public School System.
