Vice President Kamala Harris plans to spend Election Night at Howard University, her alma mater, the historically Black college in Washington, D.C., which she has credited with significantly influencing her identity and decision to pursue a legal career.
This information was confirmed by a source familiar with Harris’s plans, who requested anonymity prior to the official announcement. Howard University is notable for being the place where Harris ran her first campaign as a freshman class representative and where she joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Additionally, Harris launched her 2019 presidential campaign from Howard and conducted debate preparation there in August.
In a letter to Howard’s student newspaper, The Hilltop, Harris referred to the university as “The Mecca” and expressed gratitude for the memories she made there as a student, acknowledging the role the institution played in shaping her.
Harris is the first vice president to have graduated from a Historically Black College or University (HBCU), and if elected, she would become the first president to have graduated from such an institution. Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump is set to hold a watch party at a convention center in West Palm Beach, Florida, according to his campaign.
The election results may not be finalized on Tuesday night, as a tight race could result in several days of ballot counting, similar to the situation four years ago. It remains uncertain where Harris will be in the days following Election Day at Howard.
Harris’s campaign is preparing for multiple potential scenarios, including the possibility that former President Trump may contest the election results should Harris emerge victorious. Harris noted to WISN-12, a local news station in Milwaukee, that resources have been allocated in anticipation of such a challenge, stating, “We have certainly a lot of resources that are dedicated to that possibility, knowing he’s done it before.” When pressed for further details, she added, “I mean, we got a lot of lawyers.”
