The Trump campaign views Oakland County as advantageous for discussing economic issues and promoting plans for tariffs on trade, with blue-collar union workers seen as potentially influential in the election.
Both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Trump are addressing union audiences. Harris is set to speak at a union hall in Lansing, Michigan’s capital. Recently, Jackson conversed with union members at an event for Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Harris’s Vice Presidential choice. Venus Powell, a union member from Detroit residing in the suburbs, expressed strong support for Harris at that event.
Harris is working to bolster backing among union workers and suburban women, having received endorsements from the UAW, AFL-CIO, and Michigan Teamsters, although the national Teamsters opted not to endorse. Her campaign focuses on issues resonant with suburban women, such as reproductive rights. Recent years have seen Democrats make inroads in Oakland County, an area once predominantly Republican.
