Vice President JD Vance conveyed to the citizens of Greenland that their future would be more promising as part of the United States rather than under Denmark’s governance. These comments were made during his visit to a U.S. military base in the Arctic region on Friday. Vance’s statements arise amid continued interest from President Trump in acquiring Greenland, which has provoked strong reactions from both Greenland and Denmark.
Vice President Vance emphasized Greenland’s right to self-determination, asserting that the United States does not intend to annex the territory by force. He argued that under U.S. security protection, Greenland would fare better compared to its current situation under Denmark’s security umbrella. Vance criticized Denmark for its lack of investment in Greenland and its security infrastructure, highlighting this as a reason behind President Trump’s stance towards Greenland.
The trip to Greenland involved Second Lady Usha Vance, National Security Adviser Michael Waltz, Energy Secretary Chris Wright, along with other dignitaries. However, the original travel plans were adjusted after Greenland and Denmark expressed concern over not being informed. Initially, a solo visit by the Second Lady to Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, was intended, including a cultural tour and attendance at a dogsled race.
On the same day, President Trump emphasized Greenland’s strategic importance to U.S. national security due to the presence of Chinese and Russian warships in its waterways. He stated that the United States must secure Greenland for international security reasons and cannot depend on Denmark or any other nation to manage the situation appropriately.
Despite these assertions, polling indicates that the majority of Greenlanders are against the idea of becoming part of the United States. Protests on the island have been substantial, with demonstrators carrying signs saying “Yankees Go Home” and wearing caps with the message “Make America Go Away.” Both Greenland and Denmark have reiterated that Greenland is not available for purchase.
