Access Point, a new Registered Apprenticeship program sponsor, has announced the enrollment of 30 high school students as tech apprentices as part of their program for students from historically marginalized groups. The program aims to provide opportunities for underrepresented populations to pursue careers in the tech industry. Access Point was recently approved by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) as a Registered Apprenticeship program sponsor, with support from Safal Partners and the Missouri Chamber Foundation’s Industry-Driven IT Apprenticeship Grant program. The DOL’s approval coincides with National Apprenticeship Week.
During the Access Point signing ceremony, the 30 students signed agreements to be formally registered as apprentices, and the first formal employer partner for the program was announced as Daugherty Business Solutions. Notable speakers at the event included the Superintendent of The School District of University City, the Vice President of Technology at Cigna, the CEO and President of Daugherty Business Solutions, and Senator Brian Williams. The program was also formally recognized by the DOL Office of Apprenticeship in Missouri.
According to Bill Mitchell, Access Point’s Executive Director, the program is designed to provide promising students with the skills, knowledge, and practical experience required for success in the tech workforce. The Registered Apprenticeship program also offers significant benefits for both employers and apprentices, including on-the-job learning and a portable credential. The program is seen as a way to create a stronger and more diverse tech workforce and provide life-changing opportunities for students.
