Adobe Showcases Illustrator Tools for Vector Rotation and Sketch Completion

Adobe is developing experimental technology that aims to accelerate the concept and planning phases for graphic designers and audio engineers. During Adobe’s MAX event, several “sneaks” were showcased, including tools capable of converting sketches into various polished designs and a feature that allows 2D artwork to be rotated as if it were a 3D object.

One of these innovations, “Project Turntable,” enables users to change the viewing perspective of a vector image by clicking a button and adjusting a slider, a process that typically would require redrawing the image from scratch. Demonstrations at the event showed that the designs maintained their original form upon rotation, avoiding any distortion. For instance, the yellow underbelly and tail of a dragon illustration stayed consistent throughout changes in perspective.

For those who prefer working with physical mediums such as pencil and paper, “Project Remix A Lot” offers the capability to digitize designs. This feature includes a “Sketch to layout” button that, using generative AI, transforms rough designs into editable digital images. Users can further resize the final image into various formats suitable for social media or blog use by clicking the “Layout variations” button.

It’s worth noting that these experimental tools may not necessarily become commercially available, as Adobe utilizes its sneaks program primarily to showcase cutting-edge technology and determine demand. Nevertheless, past features like Photoshop’s Remove tool and Adobe’s Fresco painting app, which debuted as sneaks, eventually became accessible to the public, suggesting a possibility for these new tools to be integrated into Illustrator in the future.

Beyond vector art, Adobe also introduced “Project Hi-Fi,” a Photoshop plugin that employs part of the user’s workspace as a reference for AI image generation, similar to Adobe’s structure reference feature for Firefly, but with expanded customization options.

Additionally, for audio engineers, “Project Super Sonic” allows the generation of sample sound effects through prompts or by selecting objects in silent videos, such as a flowing stream or jungle ferns. The tool identifies what the user selects and generates the appropriate sound effect without the need for manual searching through audio libraries. Moreover, users can adjust the timing of these sound effects using their voice, offering more precision than a text description.
