AMD’s New Frame Tech Boosts FPS in More Games

AFMF is a frame-generation technology akin to Nvidia’s DLSS Frame Generation but functions at the driver level instead of through game-specific integration. The second generation of AFMF can be activated in OpenGL, Vulkan, DirectX 11, or DirectX 12 games. This allows for an increase in frames per second (fps) in titles that do not support FSR and DLSS and is presently compatible with AMD Radeon RX 6000, RX 7000, 700M, and 800M GPUs.

Based on AMD’s tests, AFMF 2, in combination with other optimizations, can significantly enhance framerate compared to raw game performance. The updated version of AFMF can, according to AMD, potentially increase fps by up to 250 percent on average when used alongside the company’s FSR 2 technology and Hypr-RX optimization suite. However, actual performance varies depending on the GPU, game, and resolution. Reports from Digital Foundry indicate that fps was typically doubled when testing the AFMF 2 beta in games like Control, CyberPunk 2077, and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II at 4K resolution using a Radeon RX 7900 GRE GPU.

The AFMF update also includes fast motion optimization to address issues from the first generation of AFMF that disabled Frame Generation in games with fast movements. Additionally, AMD has introduced two AI-optimized adjustable modes for AFMF 2, giving users control over the feature’s impact on game performance. Search Mode adjusts fps smoothness and image quality during fast-motion scenes in games, while Performance Mode can enhance AFMF efficiency on low-power devices.

AFMF 2 is compatible with borderless fullscreen game modes on RX 7000 GPUs and integrates AMD’s Radeon Chill low-latency FPS cap to reduce lag typically caused by fps boosters. Beyond gaming, it introduces a new “geometric downscaling” feature that minimizes aliasing and other visual artifacts when videos are played in a window smaller than their native resolution. This feature is supported in DirectX 11 applications running on Radeon RX 7000 and integrated Radeon 800M GPUs.
