Analogue3D’s Retro Console Highlights Flaws of the N64 Controller

The article discusses the widespread sentiment regarding the Nintendo 64 (N64) controller, historically referred to as Nintendo’s trident joypad for its third home console. This controller, largely seen as cumbersome, is often nostalgically remembered by those of a certain age who recall playing games like Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros., and Ocarina of Time. However, nostalgia may obscure the less favorable aspects of using this controller, described as difficult to handle.

The article then explains the resurgence of disdain for the N64 controller, prompted by the announcement of the Analogue3D. This upcoming third-party console promises a modern solution for playing original Nintendo 64 game cartridges on contemporary 4K televisions. Distinct from other recent “mini” consoles like the SNES Classic Mini or Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Mini, the Analogue3D does not rely on game emulation. Instead, it runs original cartridges through a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) chip that effectively emulates the original console’s hardware.

Analogue, the company behind this innovation, has a track record of reviving classic gaming systems. Their previous release, the Analogue Pocket, is a handheld device designed to play original Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges, and can be accessorized to support additional platforms like Game Gear and Neo Geo Pocket Color.

The Analogue3D is anticipated to be a significant advancement. The console is constructed around an advanced FPGA chip—the 220k LE Altera Cyclone 10GX, which is touted as the most powerful used by Analogue to date. It supports N64 cartridges globally in both NTSC and PAL formats, includes an inbuilt Nintendo Expansion Pak to enhance performance, and outputs visuals in either 4K or original display modes, allowing for an authentic gaming experience with features like immersive scanlines and shadow masks.
