Aqara’s latest lock, the U50, has been installed on a front door for nearly three months, seamlessly integrating into the daily life of a family just before the holiday season. The family quickly adapted to the new code, and although two keys were distributed, they have not been required.
This lock is noted for being the most affordable among those tested, yet it encompasses all desired features in a smart lock. These features include automated locking after a set time, the ability to generate multiple entry codes, and the capability to determine if the door is open or closed without additional accessories or sensors. Unlike some smart-home and security companies, it does not have hidden subscription fees.
The U50 lock is highly regarded, but users are advised to purchase the Aqara M3 Hub, priced at $110, to access all available features. This additional cost nearly doubles the expense of acquiring the lock. However, if Wi-Fi access is not a necessity, which results in a lack of smart-home integrations and the inability to remotely check the door’s lock status, this budget-friendly lock is a commendable choice.
In terms of design, the U50 features a minimalist aesthetic, with a modern keypad on its exterior and a sleek deadbolt on the interior. The keypad showcases a large sans serif font with two buttons following the zero: an Away Mode button, configurable through the Aqara app, and an Enter/Lock button, used after entering the code or to relock the door. The keypad requires activation by tapping it before code entry, necessitating a deliberate press rather than a light touch.
Below the keypad lies a concealed keyhole, covered by a sliding panel. This panel clicks into place when opened, eliminating the need to hold it while using a key. This feature enhances security against lock picking, as the sliding capability is not immediately apparent. Additionally, a locksmith can rekey it if desired.
