Last year, Automattic, the owner of WordPress.com, acquired the multi-service messaging app Beeper for $125 million and announced plans to merge it with Texts.com, another application previously acquired in the same category. Following this merger, Beeper has released the first set of redesigned apps for iOS and desktop in beta version.
In a blog post, Beeper detailed that the desktop app was developed using the foundational technology of the Texts.com app, while the iOS app was created entirely from scratch. The company emphasized that these new applications are designed to be faster and more efficient with battery usage.
Kishan Bagaria, founder of Texts.com, stated on the social media platform X that although users can continue to use the old app, the company intends to offer a straightforward method for transitioning to the new apps.
Currently, the app utilizes Beeper Cloud for storing messages and credentials for other services. However, future versions of the app are expected to transition all of this data to on-device storage and introduce on-device encryption, enhancing privacy and security. Additionally, the new apps will support multiple accounts linked to the same messaging service. Bagaria also noted that in the future, the Mac app will enable users to send and receive iMessages.
Beeper was founded by Eric Migicovsky, who is also known for founding the Pebble smartwatch and serving as a partner at Y-Combinator. Following the acquisition by Automattic, Migicovsky took on the role of head of messaging at Beeper. However, he recently announced that he is now concentrating on redeveloping Pebble.
