Bluesky Update Introduces Chat Reactions and Explore Page, Like X

Bluesky, the social networking platform, is introducing an updated version of its software, integrating some features that former users of X have sought. While it does not include an edit button, the network is implementing chat reactions in its direct messaging feature and redesigning its search page as “Explore.” This update directs users to trends, suggested accounts, Starter Packs, and additional content.

These features draw inspiration from X, where users have been able to react to direct messages with emojis since 2020. X later expanded this feature, allowing users to choose any emoji beyond the default set. Bluesky now offers a similar functionality, permitting users to click on an emoji button next to a message to add a reaction. Initially, a selection of common emojis such as a heart, thumbs up, eyes, sad face, and laughing face is provided. However, users can click on a three-dot menu to choose any other emoji for their reaction, akin to the experience on X.

Significantly, the revamped Bluesky search page enhances user connectivity by showcasing trending topics on the network. This feature has gained relevance as Bluesky’s user base has grown to over 34 million, making it easier to identify emerging trends within platform discussions. Current trends include events such as Trump’s tariffs and their impact, as well as popular communities like the readers on BookSky. These trends are labeled with indicators such as “New,” “Hot,” or the time since they began trending, for example, “5h ago.”

The updated Explore page allows users to specify their interests, thereby personalizing the content presented to them on Bluesky. It also provides recommendations for accounts to follow across various categories including art, sports, music, comics, politics, science, news, animals, books, and video games, among others.

Additionally, the application suggests engaging Starter Packs—curated lists of users that newcomers can follow with a click—and other popular custom feeds, like NFL+, which connects users discussing American football on Bluesky.

Earlier this week, Bluesky’s Chief Technology Officer, Paul Frazee, acknowledged the role of new hire Darrin Loeliger in the revamped Explore page, noting that Loeliger demonstrated the benefits of bringing a designer onto the team.

While these updates may be considered minor, they could enhance the experience for former X users transitioning to Bluesky, offering comparable tools to facilitate engagement with friends and discover discussions, people, and interests.
