Deezer Nears Profitability, Launches Custom Algorithm and New Features

Last month, Deezer reported experiencing its first positive cash flow in 2024, which marked a significant milestone in the music streaming platform’s history. As the company approaches profitability, it is introducing new features to stand out in the competitive market.

On Wednesday, Deezer announced several new features designed to offer a more personalized experience for listeners. These features include a customizable algorithm, monthly recaps, universal sharing options, and more.

Deezer particularly highlights its custom algorithm as a distinguishing feature, allowing listeners to fully personalize their recommendations without any restrictions. Beginning this month, users will have the capability to manually adjust recommended songs, playlists, albums, and artists, therefore having complete control over their music discovery experience.

While competitor platforms like Amazon Music, Apple Music, and YouTube Music allow users to dislike or hide songs to reduce their presence in recommendations, Deezer extends this capability by letting users completely exclude songs, artists, or entire playlists and albums through a new “Manage My Recommendations” section.

Additionally, Deezer has introduced a “dislike” button to complement the existing “like” feature. Users now have the ability to express disapproval of particular tracks by selecting a crossed-out heart symbol, thus informing the algorithm to avoid recommending that track in the future.

Among other features aimed at enhancing customization, Deezer has included options for personalizing playlist covers with various colors and stickers, along with the ability to customize the Favorites tab to prioritize preferred albums or artists for easier access. These features will be available next month.

Deezer also revealed a new monthly recap feature, “My Deezer Month,” which complements its annual wrap-up feature, “My Deezer Year.” In early May, users will be able to view monthly statistics including their most listened-to songs, artists, and genres, with detailed activity breakdowns like comparisons of total listening minutes from the previous month and total hours spent on their top three genres.

Addressing the challenge posed by competing platforms, Deezer aims to gain traction in an area where Spotify remains dominant with its yearly recaps. While Apple Music launched a monthly version of its Replay feature last year, it remains to be seen if Deezer’s effort will reach similar popularity levels.

According to the company, there was a 30% increase in the use of “My Deezer Year” by the start of 2025.

Deezer also introduced a universal sharing feature that allows users to share a song with friends. Upon sharing, recipients are directed to Deezer’s website, where they can access links to various services where the song is available, including Spotify and Apple Music, enabling the enjoyment of the music without a Deezer account. Universal sharing is set to launch in late April.

While Deezer is approaching profitability, it noted a slight decline in subscribers, decreasing from 10 million in 2023 to 9.7 million in 2024. By contrast, Spotify boasts over 675 million monthly active users, with 263 million of them being paying subscribers.
