Ferrari F80’s ‘Boost Optimization’ Enhances Power for Drivers’ Needs

Ferrari’s latest hypercar, the F80, is equipped with a feature that allows it to record the track it is navigating and enhance the driver’s performance in the subsequent lap. The "Boost Optimization" technology analyzes straights and curves of the circuit and autonomously increases power to the hybrid system, aiming to achieve optimal lap times.

The F80 offers two modes for utilizing Boost Optimization. In "Performance" mode, it provides a consistent level of electric power throughout the drive, maintaining energy for as long as possible. Alternatively, "Qualify" mode maximizes boost power at critical moments, although it rapidly depletes the battery. In contrast to Ferrari’s SF90 Stradale and 296 GTB, the F80 does not feature a full-electric driving mode.

The F80 is powered by a 4WD powertrain, which includes a rear V6 engine producing 900 horsepower. When combined with its three electric motors, the total maximum power output reaches 1200 horsepower, making the F80 Ferrari’s "most powerful road car ever." These electric motors are Ferrari’s first fully developed in-house, drawing inspiration from the MGU-K motor used in Formula 1.

Two of the electric motors are located on the front axle, paired with an inverter and integrated cooling system, enabling torque vectoring and reducing overall weight. A DC-to-DC converter that delivers 800, 48, and 12 volts contributes to weight reduction, as the F80 does not require a separate 48-volt battery to power its active suspension and e-turbo systems.

Additionally, the F80 includes a "digital twin" side slip control system and active aerodynamics to enhance downforce during cornering, thus maintaining optimal vehicle balance.

Ferrari plans a limited production run of 799 F80 units, each priced over $3 million. According to Road & Track, these vehicles have already been allocated to existing customers.
