Ford has introduced its own branded specialty adapter to enable access to Tesla Superchargers for its electric vehicle (EV) customers. Alongside this new adapter, the automaker will continue to offer the Tesla-produced adapter for customers still waiting for a complimentary version. Distribution of Ford’s adapter is set to begin immediately.
The adapters are being manufactured by the EV equipment supply company Lectron, which has a history of producing "Vortex" NACS to CCS adapters. Previously, Lectron recalled its adapters due to a design flaw that could cause them to unlatch during charging.
In a State of Charge interview, Lectron’s CEO, Christopher Maiwald, confirmed that the issue has been resolved. Eddie Fernandez, a PR representative for Ford, explained in an email to The Verge that the new adapters are not related to the previously problematic ones that Ford advised customers to stop using. Fernandez stated that the adapters involved in the customer satisfaction program represented only a small portion of the overall supply.
Ford has recently launched a campaign called Power Promise, aimed at encouraging prospective EV buyers to embrace the EV lifestyle. To support this initiative, the company is offering a complimentary home charger with standard installation.
