General Dynamics Electric Boat has delivered the USS Hyman G. Rickover (SSN 795) Virginia-class attack submarine to the US Navy. The USS Hyman G. Rickover is the 22nd submarine in the Virginia class and measures 377 feet long with a displacement of 7,300 tons. It is equipped with 12 vertical missile launch tubes, four torpedo tubes, and can hold up to 26 Mk48 ADCAP Mod 6 heavyweight torpedoes and anti-ship missiles. The USS Hyman G. Rickover is part of a multi-year procurement program and is named after the father of the US Nuclear Navy, Admiral Hyman G. Rickover.
According to a Selected Acquisition Report, two new submarines are planned for delivery in 2023, including the USS Hyman G. Rickover. In addition, the USS Vermont and USS Montana are projected to complete their post-shakedown availabilities and re-deliver to the fleet this year. In FY2024, the Navy plans to procure two more Virginia-class submarines, but these will be a standalone purchase, separate from the multi-year procurement programs. The Navy’s decision to treat these two boats separately is aimed at better aligning the schedule for the next Virginia-class multi-year contract and the contracts for procuring Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines.
The delivery of the USS Hyman G. Rickover is a significant milestone for General Dynamics Electric Boat and the US Navy. The submarine’s advanced capabilities and stealth technology demonstrate the Navy’s commitment to maintaining a strong and capable submarine fleet. With the completion of the USS Hyman G. Rickover, the Navy is one step closer to achieving its goals of modernizing its submarine force and ensuring national security. The vessel’s namesake, Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, is widely regarded as a pioneer in nuclear propulsion and his legacy continues to inspire and guide the Navy’s nuclear fleet.
