GM, Ford, Rivian, and Others Gain Access to Tesla Superchargers

In May 2023, Ford initiated a significant transformation when the U.S. automaker secured a deal to provide owners of its electric vehicles (EVs) access to the Tesla Supercharger network. This move prompted a series of similar decisions from other major automakers, including General Motors (GM), Hyundai, Rivian, and Mercedes-Benz. By the end of 2023, nearly every major automaker had agreed to adopt Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), assuring EV owners that adapters would soon be available.

However, many non-Tesla customers continue to await access, despite recent announcements from various automakers suggesting forthcoming solutions. TechCrunch is monitoring which brands have access to the Tesla Supercharging Network and will update this list accordingly.

The transition to Tesla’s EV charging standard began in November 2022 when Tesla shared its EV charging connector design, encouraging network operators and automakers to adopt the technology as the new North American standard. At that time, most automakers used the Combined Charging Standard (CCS), and widespread adoption of Tesla’s standard seemed unlikely, despite the Tesla charging network’s superior and user-friendly design.

Six months later, Ford became the first to announce its collaboration with Tesla, granting Ford customers access to over 12,000 Superchargers across the U.S. and Canada. The agreement involved more than just special adapters; Ford also committed to equipping future EVs with NACS ports instead of CCS. Following Ford’s lead, Rivian, GM, BMW, Honda, Volkswagen, Porsche, Audi, Hyundai, Kia, Lucid, and Stellantis also adopted the standard.

In the U.S., there are currently 36,499 public NACS ports, compared to approximately 16,925 CCS ports, despite federal funding aimed explicitly at developing CCS infrastructure. EV owners with CCS ports must wait for manufacturer-approved adapters, as current third-party options are not endorsed by Tesla. A GM spokesperson confirmed that GM adapters are designed to protect the company’s EV batteries, and GM warranties do not cover damages from non-approved adapters.

In late August, Tesla announced it had increased adapter production, which, coupled with GM’s announcement, indicates an expansion in the availability of Supercharger stations for non-Tesla EVs. Owners will need to use the Tesla app to pay for charging.

Specific automakers are actively working on enabling access for their EVs. Ford customers gained official access to Tesla Superchargers in February 2024, although supply constraints delayed adapter delivery. By early 2025, more Ford customers were receiving their adapters.

As of September 2024, GM updated its software to allow Chevy, Cadillac, and GMC EVs to use Tesla Superchargers, requiring customers to purchase an approved adapter. From 2025, GM EVs will be manufactured with NACS charge ports.

In March 2025, Honda announced that owners of the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX EVs will gain NACS access by June, with future models integrating the charging standard. Hyundai plans to provide Kia EV owners access to NACS chargers starting in January 2025, with future models featuring NACS ports. Hyundai plans to distribute free adapters to eligible customers by early 2025.

Lucid gave Gravity SUV owners access to Tesla’s Supercharger network in January 2025, with adapters for Lucid Air sedan owners available in the second quarter. Mercedes-Benz began enabling access in February 2025, offering an adapter purchase option. Nissan, starting in late 2024, provided Ariya drivers with access through an adapter. Rivian gained access to Superchargers in March 2024, with adapters distributed in stages. Volvo and Polestar began offering their customers access in October 2024, supplying NACS adapters or enabling purchases.
