Google Appoints New Executive for Search and Ads

Google announced a significant change in its leadership structure. In a memo to employees, Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, revealed that Prabhakar Raghavan, the senior vice president responsible for search, ads, and other important segments, will assume the position of chief technologist.

According to Pichai, Raghavan has chosen to make a substantial advancement in his career. After spending 12 years leading various teams at Google, Raghavan will return to his computer science roots in the role of Chief Technologist. In this new capacity, he will collaborate closely with Pichai and other Google leaders to provide technical guidance and cultivate a culture of technological excellence within the company.

Raghavan has overseen ads and commerce since 2018 and was promoted to lead Google Search and Assistant in 2020. He will be succeeded by Nick Fox, a member of Raghavan’s leadership team, who will take over responsibility for Google’s Search, ads, geo, and commerce divisions. Pichai noted that Fox has been instrumental in launching products such as Google Fi and RCS messaging.

In addition, Google is reorganizing other parts of its organization. The team managing Google’s Gemini app, which is led by Sissie Hsaio, will become part of Google DeepMind under CEO Demis Hassabis. Moreover, the Google Assistant team will be integrated into Google’s platforms and devices team.

This organizational shift occurs at a critical juncture for Google, as the company aims to solidify its position as a key player in artificial intelligence. Concurrently, Google faces the potential challenge of being broken up by the US government after being declared a monopoly in its search business.
