Google has introduced a new experimental tool utilizing artificial intelligence to assist individuals in exploring a broader range of career opportunities. In a blog post published on Wednesday, the company revealed the “Career Dreamer” tool, which identifies patterns among a user’s experiences, educational background, skills, and interests to suggest potential careers that may be a suitable match.
Through Career Dreamer, users have the ability to create a career identity statement by selecting their current and previous roles, relevant skills, experiences, education, and interests. Google suggests that this career identity statement can be incorporated into a résumé or used as a conversation guide during an interview.
The tool offers a visual web of possible career paths aligned with a user’s background and interests. For those interested in a particular career, the platform enables deeper exploration into its requirements and scope.
Additionally, Career Dreamer provides the option to collaborate with Gemini, Google’s AI assistant, to draft cover letters or résumés and brainstorm further career ideas.
However, unlike platforms such as Indeed and LinkedIn, Career Dreamer does not connect users with actual job listings. Its primary function is to facilitate swift exploration of various careers without necessitating numerous Google searches to find a suitable match.
As of now, Career Dreamer is available only as an experimental feature in the United States, with no current information on potential expansion to other countries.
Google expressed in its blog post that they hope Career Dreamer will be valuable to a diverse range of job seekers. During its development, Google collaborated with organizations that cater to various communities, including students embarking on their first careers, recent graduates entering the workforce, adult learners seeking new opportunities, and members of the military community such as transitioning service members, military spouses, and veterans. The tool is recommended for those contemplating a career change or simply curious about available options.
The blog post also references a report from the World Economic Forum highlighting that individuals typically hold around 12 different jobs throughout their lives, with Gen Z expected to undertake 18 jobs across six different careers.
Google acknowledges the challenge of shaping previous experiences into a cohesive career narrative, particularly for individuals with non-traditional career paths. Career Dreamer aims to address this challenge by helping users better express how their existing skills can be applicable to other job roles.
