Google’s Passkey Syncing Simplifies Password-Free Transition

Google is enhancing passkey support in Chrome by streamlining the use of passwordless sign-in credentials across multiple devices. The company is rolling out a Google Password Manager PIN, which allows users to securely save and synchronize passkeys for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android devices. This update is currently available in beta for ChromeOS, with iOS support expected soon.

Previously, passkeys needed to be saved to Google Password Manager on Android. Users were required to scan a QR code on their Android device to access the passkeys on other platforms. The new PIN system eliminates the need for QR code scanning while ensuring that saved passkeys are protected by end-to-end encryption, preventing even Google from accessing them. To use passkeys on a new device, users must unlock their Android screen or enter their Password Manager PIN.

By default, users can set up a six-digit PIN, or they have the option to create a longer alphanumeric PIN under the “PIN options” settings.
