Developed collaboratively by Apple, Amazon, Google, Samsung, and others, Matter is an open-sourced, IP-based connectivity software layer for smart home devices. It operates over Wi-Fi, ethernet, and the low-power mesh networking protocol known as Thread, currently supporting over 30 types of devices. These devices include, but are not limited to, lighting, thermostats, locks, robot vacuums, refrigerators, dishwashers, dryers, ovens, smoke alarms, air quality monitors, and EV chargers.
A smart home gadget that bears the Matter logo can be set up and utilized with any Matter-compatible ecosystem via a Matter controller. Furthermore, it can be managed by more than one system using a feature called Multi-Admin.
Major smart home platforms that support Matter include Amazon Alexa, Google Home, Samsung SmartThings, and Apple Home, alongside hundreds of device manufacturers.
