Jim Zemlin Discusses ‘Portfolio Approach’ for Linux Foundation Projects

The Linux Foundation has evolved significantly over the years, expanding beyond its initial focus as the caretaker of the Linux kernel to encompass a vast array of open source projects. These projects span various sectors including cloud infrastructure, security, digital wallets, enterprise search, fintech, maps, and many others.

Recently, the OpenInfra Foundation, renowned for OpenStack, became the latest entity to align with the Linux Foundation, further solidifying the foundation’s reputation as a “foundation of foundations.” Established in 2007 through the merger of the Open Source Development Labs and the Free Standards Group, the Linux Foundation was initially formed to challenge the dominant closed platforms of the time, particularly in response to Windows.

Jim Zemlin, the Linux Foundation’s executive director, noted that while Windows benefited from consistency under a single entity, Linux offered users freedom, customization, and flexibility without vendor lock-in. Over the years, Zemlin has guided the Linux Foundation through various technological shifts, including mobile, cloud, and artificial intelligence, transforming it from being purely Linux-centric to covering almost every technological aspect.

During a recent interview at KubeCon in London, Zemlin discussed the importance of adopting a “portfolio approach” akin to how companies diversify to avoid dependency on a single product. By aggregating multiple significant projects under one organization, the foundation leverages expertise across various sectors, allowing it to address complex technological and legal challenges collectively.

The recent merger with the OpenInfra Foundation exemplifies this strategy. OpenStack, which originated from a collaboration between Rackspace and NASA, has grown beyond its initial scope and undergone rebranding, eventually becoming OpenInfra. Zemlin has been acquainted with Jonathan Bryce, CEO of the OpenInfra Foundation, for years. Both foundations have collaborated on various initiatives, and Zemlin emphasized the joint capability to tackle issues like regulatory compliance, cybersecurity, and open source legal challenges.

The Linux Foundation has further expanded globally with regional entities. Notable branches include LF India, launched a few months ago, and older establishments in Japan and Europe. These expansions support regional collaboration while maintaining global participation and open source principles.

The role of open source in artificial intelligence (AI) has become more pronounced, with ongoing debates about the definition of “open source” in AI technologies. The Linux Foundation, through the LF AI & Data Foundation, has developed the Model Openness Framework to bring clarity and nuance to this conversation, addressing the openness of AI models regarding code, data, and other parameters.

Additionally, Zemlin likened the Linux Foundation’s approach to that of a “reverse venture capitalist,” focusing on “project-market” fit rather than profit, and aiming to identify technologies that can significantly impact industries. Despite its wide-ranging projects, the Linux Foundation’s name remains unchanged, with Zemlin confirming the enduring brand strength associated with Linux.
