Meta Announces Layoffs Across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Other Divisions

Meta has initiated layoffs across several departments, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Reality Labs, as reported by individuals familiar with the situation. These layoffs appear to be smaller and occur alongside specific team reorganizations, rather than as a company-wide cut.

Some employees at Meta have begun sharing news of their layoffs publicly. Among those affected is Jane Manchun Wong, known for her work in uncovering unannounced app features prior to joining the Threads team in 2023.

The Verge has requested confirmation from Meta regarding the layoffs and plans to update the story upon receiving a response.

This recent wave of layoffs builds on earlier reductions within the company’s Reality Labs division earlier this year. Initially, Meta reduced its workforce by 11,000 employees in 2022, after overestimating growth prospects following the COVID-19 pandemic. This was followed by an announcement to cut 10,000 more positions as part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s “year of efficiency” in 2023.
