Meta, Google, and Amazon have withdrawn from Web Summit, Europe’s largest technology conference, following criticism of Israel’s actions by CEO Paddy Cosgrave. Cosgrave had condemned Israel’s air strikes on the Gaza strip, calling them war crimes. As a result, a group of Israeli investors called for a boycott of the event, leading to several major companies and individuals pulling out, including Intel and Siemens. However, Cosgrave has since issued an apology for his remarks, expressing his aim for peace.
The Web Summit, set to take place in Lisbon from November 13-16, is expected to host thousands of startups and tens of thousands of attendees. The event has faced significant backlash due to Cosgrave’s comments, with many industry figures supporting the boycott. Intel, Siemens, US comedian Amy Poehler, and X-files actor Gillian Anderson have all withdrawn from participating.
Cosgrave, in a blogpost, acknowledged the hurt caused by his remarks and apologized for not conveying compassion. He emphasized his desire to strive for peace and hopes that it can be achieved. However, despite his apology, the withdrawal of major tech giants and prominent individuals has cast a shadow over the upcoming conference.
