Joelle Pineau, the Vice President of AI research at Meta, has announced her decision to depart from the company. Her departure, planned for May, follows more than two years of overseeing FAIR, Meta’s internal AI research lab, helmed by Yann LeCun.
Pineau’s exit comes amidst an escalation in Meta’s AI initiatives, with the organization planning an expenditure of $65 billion on AI infrastructure by 2025.
In a statement to Bloomberg News, a Meta spokesperson confirmed that there is no immediate replacement for Pineau but indicated that a search for her successor is underway. Last year, Meta reorganized its structure so that the AI research unit reported directly to the company’s Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox.
Following her resignation, Pineau has expressed intentions to take a break before embarking on a new, undisclosed venture.
