Meta is implementing significant changes with the release of its Quest v71 update, which includes a redesign of the Meta Horizon OS, the introduction of a calendar app, and the extension of Travel Mode to train journeys. The update will begin its gradual rollout next week.
In terms of the redesign, Meta is adjusting the aesthetic and functionality of Horizon OS. The new update will default to an improved light theme for new headsets. However, the dark theme remains available, and current users of the dark mode will not experience an automatic switch. According to a company blog post, various modifications have been made to panel appearances and functions, the positioning of the control bar, and the color scheme of different user interface elements. Additionally, the Settings menu has been given a new design and layout, along with enhanced search capabilities.
The calendar app functions as expected from a calendar application. A brief video demonstration suggests that users will be able to navigate through different days while in VR. The app offers integration with Google and Outlook calendars and will also display Meta Horizon Worlds events that users subscribe to, as well as scheduled meetings taking place in Meta Horizon Workrooms.
With the latest update, Travel Mode will now be functional on trains. Initially introduced in May, this feature was previously only available for use on airplanes. It is important to note that while using Travel Mode, the Quest Pro or Touch Plus controllers are not supported, which may limit gameplay options. Travel Mode is likely more suited for watching movies or TV shows during travel. Meta has specifically stated that Travel Mode should not be used in a car.
