‘Minecraft Movie’ Set for $135M Opening Weekend Debut

The film adaptation of the popular video game franchise Minecraft earned $58 million on its opening day, setting it on a course for a domestic opening weekend total of approximately $135 million—or potentially more. This debut would position “A Minecraft Movie” as the year’s top opening, surpassing “Captain America: Brave New World,” which garnered $88.8 million during its February opening weekend. Such a performance would offer a significant boost to the theater box office, which ComScore reported had seen a 7% year-over-year decline as of 2025, following substantial drops from the pre-pandemic era.

The growing influence of video games, especially those that appeal to children, in Hollywood is noteworthy, potentially overtaking superhero comics as the go-to source for blockbuster material. In 2023, “The Super Mario Brothers Movie” was only surpassed in success by “Barbie,” while “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” achieved major success during the recent winter holidays.

Minecraft, originally developed by Marcus “Notch” Persson and acquired by Microsoft in 2014, commands a large following with 204 million monthly active users recorded in December. However, it presented unique challenges for filmmakers due to its virtual sandbox nature and lack of a specific narrative or characters.

Directed by Jared Hess, renowned for “Napoleon Dynamite,” and featuring six credited screenwriters, “A Minecraft Movie” addresses these challenges by placing human characters, portrayed by actors like Jason Momoa and Jack Black, into a fantasy world that retains the iconic blocky style of the game. Although the film has received mixed reviews, it follows a pattern similar to “The Super Mario Brothers Movie,” which also overcame critical reception to achieve substantial box office success.

The strong weekend performance is encouraging news for Warner Bros., whose film division has recently experienced several unsuccessful releases, including “The Alto Knights” and “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Given this success, it is likely that a sequel to “A Minecraft Movie” will follow.
