Researchers at the University of Aberdeen have developed an advanced underwater holographic camera in conjunction with artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to assist fish farmers in managing sea lice. The project, which has received funding from the UK Seafood Innovation Fund, aims to rapidly detect and manage the parasite that poses a significant challenge to Scottish salmon farms. By combining holographic 3D imaging with AI-based automated image identification technology, the team hopes to identify the presence and abundance of microscopic sea lice larvae in the ocean. The technology will provide high-resolution images of various particles in the water, allowing for the quick and accurate detection of sea lice.
The holographic camera replaces the traditional method of collecting water samples and analyzing them in a lab, which can take several days to yield results. With its ability to instantaneously record a volume of water and extract high-resolution images, the camera provides a significant advantage in terms of processing time. The researchers are also using AI techniques to support the identification process, as identifying sea lice from other species has been likened to finding a needle in a haystack. The camera will be trained to recognize sea lice by analyzing images gathered over the next 18 months, creating a baseline for future analysis.
The project involves collaboration with various partners such as the Scottish Association for Marine Science, electronics business Hi-Z 3D, seafood producer Mowi, the Sustainable Aquaculture Innovation Centre, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, and the Scottish Government’s Marine Directorate. This integrated approach aims to revolutionize fish health management in the aquaculture sector. By providing an early indication of sea lice risks at the larval stage, the system could help seafood producers implement more regular and accurate monitoring and integrate it into their management strategies.
