Glass front doors are effective for letting light in during the day but pose privacy challenges at night. The Home Depot offers a smart solution—a glass front door that can switch from clear to opaque on a schedule, with a voice command, or by pressing a button.
The smart glass Feather River door is a prehung fiberglass front door equipped with smart glass technology. A button on the door allows users to change the glass from clear to opaque. It is also compatible with The Home Depot’s Hubspace smart home app, enabling control from a smartphone. Users can schedule the glass to be clear during the day and opaque at night. The door is priced at $798 for a three-quarters lite option, $899 for a half lite, and $998 for a full lite, similar in cost to a non-smart front door.
Hubspace is The Home Depot’s initiative to simplify smart home technology for its customers. The platform does not require a hub, just the Hubspace app, which can connect and control a variety of The Home Depot’s store brands, including smart lights, shades, bathroom fans, and thermostats.
This smart glass door marks The Home Depot’s first Hubspace collaboration with a third party. It can be integrated with smart home systems like Amazon Alexa or Google Home, allowing for voice command operation to switch the door’s glass between clear and opaque.
The smart glass functions via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and requires power. The door has a built-in battery in the frame, which can be powered by a USB cable if there is an outlet nearby. The battery is removable, and the door includes a second battery and charger for convenience.
The battery only powers the glass and its connectivity features. Unlike The Home Depot’s previous smart door offering, the $4,000 M-PWR smart door from Masonite, the Feather River door does not include built-in power for a smart doorbell or door lock. It is a standard door apart from the smart glass and can accommodate a battery-powered smart lock. The door also functions as a Bluetooth-to-Wi-Fi bridge for Hubspace-compatible Bluetooth locks.
Designed for a standard entryway, the door comes with a frame and weather stripping for easy installation. The Home Depot states that the glass is of exterior security strength, with a hurricane glass option available soon.
Additionally, The Home Depot is introducing several new connected products that are compatible with the Hubspace app.
