On Friday, Nintendo revealed that its live-action film adaptation of “The Legend of Zelda” is set to debut on March 26, 2027. This announcement notably came a day after a Nintendo Direct livestream, where the company typically shares its latest updates. This timing was deliberate, as Nintendo seeks to encourage fans to download its new application, Nintendo Today!, which is designed to provide the latest company news.
During the Nintendo Direct event on Thursday, Shigeru Miyamoto, a director at Nintendo, concluded the presentation by introducing the Nintendo Today! app. Users who promptly downloaded it were the first to learn about the release date for the “Zelda” movie, as the announcement was made exclusively through this platform.
The app is intended to offer daily updates on various Nintendo games, with customization options allowing users to prioritize news about their preferred franchises. Given the current influx of new films and TV shows based on existing intellectual properties, the announcement of the “Zelda” movie may not stand out as much as it might have otherwise.
For Nintendo, leveraging its existing intellectual property has proven to be a financially rewarding strategy. The “Super Mario Bros” movie earned $1.3 billion in box office revenue from a $100 million production budget, ranking it as the 18th-highest grossing film worldwide historically.
While “Zelda” may not have the same widespread recognition as “Mario,” the “Breath of the Wild” game achieved impressive sales, exceeding 34 million copies, surpassing the combined sales of the Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal games.
With Nintendo poised to share more details about its eagerly awaited Nintendo Switch 2 next week, monitoring the Nintendo Today! app for early insights might prove beneficial.
