OpenAI is currently facing challenges in addressing capacity issues resulting from the launch of its viral image generation feature released last week.
On Monday, the company decided to disable video generation for new users of Sora, which is OpenAI’s suite of generative AI media tools.
A note on one of OpenAI’s support pages states, “We’re currently experiencing heavy traffic and have temporarily disabled Sora video generation for new accounts. If you’ve never logged into Sora before, you can still generate images with Sora.”
The recent introduction of OpenAI’s image generation capability was met with significant attention and some controversy, primarily for its ability to replicate styles similar to Studio Ghibli’s hand-drawn animation. Over the weekend, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned in posts on the platform X that the company has struggled to keep up with demand since its launch. He noted that the staff has been working late nights and through the weekend to maintain service availability.
Updated 10:08 a.m. Pacific: A previous version of this article inaccurately reported that OpenAI had disabled image generation for certain Sora users. It was, in fact, video generation that was disabled. The error is regretted.
